What is Acupuncture used for?

Acupuncture treats a wide range of conditions, and often requires a series of treatments to see results. It is an effective treatment for
  • Muscle and Joint Pain
  • Headaches and Migraines
  • Hormonal Imbalances
  • Digestive Concerns
  • Stress and Anxiety

Acupuncture supports blood flow and circulation, relieves muscle tension, decreases inflammation, regulates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and helps to relieve stress. Stimulation of acupoints releases endorphins, which triggers the happiness center in the brain to regulate stress and pain responses. Frequency and severity of symptoms diminish over time as the nervous system adjusts to maintain a relaxed state instead of a stressed and upregulated state, both physically and mentally.

In addition to needling, your acupuncturist may use other Chinese medicine therapies and techniques during your treatment session, based on each condition and which type of energy movement is ideal. You may also receive gentle massage and muscle work.

Moxabustion

Moxa can be directly placed on an acupuncture point or on a needle. It increases heat for deeper penetration while promoting circulation and bringing healing factors to the area to speed up healing process.

Cupping

Cupping is a tool that is used to relieve pain and tightness in the muscles, and helps with low back pain, arthritis and headaches. It is often used to help treat respiratory conditions (cough, asthma, congestion), painful menses, and digestive issues. It helps to stimulate lymphatic movement and decreases inflammation.

Electrical Stimulation

Electrical stimulation uses specific electric frequencies to stimulate different receptor types to decrease pain.

What to Expect at Your Appointment:

Your first acupuncture appointment (90 minutes) will include a detailed discussion with your doctor about your concerns, challenges, and goals. You will receive a customized acupuncture treatment that day that begins to treat your concerns and starts the path to restoring health. Follow-up treatments are 55 minutes long.

Your treatments may focus on a different area of the body from where your main concern is due to organ relationships and flow of qi in the body. Once treatment starts, each acupuncture point sends signals to the overall nervous system to redirect qi and blood flow to initiate a healing response.

How to Prepare For Your Appointment:

No special preparation is needed, though we encourage you to dress comfortably and in something that can provide easy access to arms, legs, abdomen, and back, as these are frequent sites where acupuncture treatments are performed. Eating a small snack or meal within two hours of the appointment is advisable.

AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS:

You should feel relaxed, though not necessarily sleepy, and ready to resume normal activity immediately. Some Chinese Medicine therapies, such as cupping, may produce bruising to the skin, but your provider will make sure to discuss this possibility with you before performing these.
